California was the tip on Boone Pickens’ spear. His Proposition 10, demanding taxpayer billions to finance a new market in natural gas fuels (Pickens’ chief business). It was obviously a first shot at taking the concept national. But voters saw through Pickens, despite the oil tycoon’s $19 million feel-good campaign for Prop 10. Hooray for the largely volunteer effort that defeated it, and kudos to the "Coalition of Everyone" that opposed it–from the Sierra Club to the Chamber of Commerce, and from consumer organizations to anti-tax activists.
